Mothers Make a Difference!

Mothers Make a Difference! is a program aimed at easing the isolation for mothers who find themselves mothering under difficult circumstances. The National Association of Mothers' Centers (NAMC) partners with other agencies and organizations to find the resources to bring a "Mothers' Center" group experience to women in transitional and low income housing and to teen moms in an alternative school setting.

For 28 years, Mothers' Centers have offered discussion groups where the reality of women's lives can be shared in a non-judgmental, supportive environment. In these groups mothers are able to share the hopes and dreams they nurture for their children's best possible development and talk about obstacles they're striving to overcome. Group members are taught to listen to each other's concerns, share solutions that have worked for them, and offer encouragement and support. Our experience shows that these group sessions also improve mothers' communication skills with their peers and with their children. Sessions also provide information about available resources and how to access them.

This program has been offered in collaboration with Bethany House, Molloy College, Suburban Housing in Bay Shore NY, the Interfaith Nutrition Network and the Educational Program for Pregnant and Parenting Adolescents. Financial support came from the CMP Foundation, and the Bishop John R. McGann Mission of Caring Fund in NY.
