Mothers Center Member, Cindy Grimm,
Wins Grant for A Mothers Life Project Cindy Grimm has been with the Mothers Center of South Huntington Public Library since it started in November 2005. She has one son who just turned 8 this January. Cindy has spent the last 15 years exhibiting her photography in galleries and shooting for local newspapers. When she recently found out about a New York State Art Decentralization Grant opened to artists being administered by the Huntington Arts Council, she decided she had to go for it even though it was only two weeks before the deadline.
She had to come up with a project that involved the community and find a non-profit sponsor. The South Huntington Public Library agreed to be the sponsor for her idea for a photography project. Cindy had recently worked on a solo exhibit using a blue dress to signify the feminine ideal that we often try but never seem to be able to live up to (you can view "Adorations of the Blue Dress" and other works by Cindy at www.Pixelstickphoto.com). The solo exhibit for Adorations inspired Cindy to use photography to depict a full representation of motherhood through the years as seen through the eyes of a variety of women. So often, mothers get bogged down with the day to day routine. As mothers, it seems we have so much to do yet cannot possibly fulfill all we think we need to accomplish, Cindy expressed. The women participating in this project are from all walks of life, all different ages and different stages of motherhood. A Mothers Life is intended to awaken the artistic vision of these mothers in their day-to-day life, resulting in a display of their personal perspectives as documented in their photographs. None of the 20 women involved are photographers but all wanted to do something creative. About half of them are Mothers Center members. All of the women are from Huntington a requirement of the project. They will meet monthly to discuss their work and the assignment for the month, to share pictures from the previous month and discuss what inspired them to take the shot and get critiques from the other women. At the end, each woman will pick her two favorite shots for the art reception and show, which is scheduled for December 6th from 2 to 4 PM, 2008. Cindy shared, Ive always done stuff on my own. This is the first time I am getting others involved in a project. Its not about the technology or the camera and the story the women tell that will create the full picture. |
