Motherhood's blog MamaBlogger365. Once a month MamaBlogger365 will feature a past or original post written by NAMC staff member and Mothers Central Blogger Kate Fineske.
Museum Of Motherhood, (M.O.M.) is a living, breathing community-centered arts, media and social change museum focused on amplifying the voices and experiences of mothers, connecting 'the cultural family', and pioneering new areas of academe in mother studies. This is the first and only facility of its kind serving as a valuable resource for those who wish to study motherhood and the cultural family, from lay-people to school children to serious scholars. M.O.M. is located at 401 East 84th St. (1st Ave.) in New York, NY.

The NAMC, host for the Long Island region, will recognize the recipients of the 2011 Alfred P. Sloan Award for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility at their upcoming 16th Annual Work/Life Conference scheduled for Friday, November 4, 2011 at the Crest Hollow in Woodbury, NY. This prestigious award recognizes employers that are successfully using flexibility as part of an effective workplace strategy to achieve business goals and benefit employees by helping them meet their responsibilities on and off the job. As host, the NAMC encouraged Long Island employers to apply for the award to gain recognition and promote Long Island businesses. The NAMC does not select the winners.
Employers of all types in the Long Island Region are invited to apply for the Alfred P. Sloan Awards for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility. Companies have the opportunity to get local and national visibility for your efforts to use flexibility as a strategy to enhance productivity, recruitment and retention in a global, four-generation workforce.
The Alfred P. Sloan Awards for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility are part of When Work Works, a national project on workplace effectiveness and workplace flexibility from Families and Work Institute. Sloan Award APPLICANTS are self-nominated employers that complete the employer survey. Employer application deadline was April 22, 2011. Long Island Winners will be presented with their award at the 16th Annual NAMC Work/Life Conference on Friday, November 4th, 2011 at the Crest Hollow in Woodbury, NY. Sloan Award winners also receive:
- National recognition, including mention in a full-page ad in USA Today.
- Official congratulations in the Congressional Record of the U.S. Senate.
- Company profile featured in a publication on Bold New Ideas for Making Work Work, by Families and Work Institute, to be distributed across the country, to a targeted media list, and made available on-line.
- The NAMC will feature local winners in their publications, outreach to members and the media, and on their website.
- Permission to use the Sloan Award Winner logo on company materials and to cite the award as a recruitment and retention tool.
All organizations with 10 or more employees in the Long Island region are eligible to apply. The 2011 application process kicks off in February. By simply applying for the Sloan Awards, companies will:
- Receive customized benchmarking reports comparing their organization with nationally representative data, local organizations, and Sloan Award Winners—a blueprint for action. The benchmarking reports include an item-by-item comparison of the employer responses to questions about the flexibility of their work environment, including support for part-time work, family and medical leave, accountability, and various flexible work arrangements.
- Have access to data to implement specific strategies to help recruit, develop, and retain talent, have more productive and satisfied employees, and positively affect the bottom line performance of your organization.

Contact us for sponsorship and vendor opportunities for this family-friendly event. Since this event is typically just before Mother's Day, it is our goal to raise awareness of the work that we do that supports mothers in every walk of life and increase the participation as we celebrate together.
Our journey to help make families the best they can be starts with mothers. The funds raised underwrite a 35 year old program that puts mom first by supporting her wherever her walk through motherhood takes her.

Launched in 2000 by Long Island Business News, the Top 50 Most Influential Women in Business program recognizes the important role women play in Long Island's economy. The honorees represent the most influential women in business, government, education, and the not-for-profit fields, and are selected by a panel of business leaders based on professional accomplishment, mentoring and community involvement. Elected in 2009, Viviana Russell holds the distinction of being the first African American woman elected to the North Hempstead Town Board. She serves New Cassel/Westbury, Carle Place and the Villages of Westbury and Old Westbury.
Concerned, committed and involved Viviana possesses powerful grassroots community building skills as well as a comprehensive knowledge of the community's needs and governmental functions. Viviana is noted for her compassionate connection and leadership as a young role model to the community. "I am humbled to be amongst such an elite group of women who are champions for women and girls" said Russell.

Russell and the other 49 honorees received a unique crystal memento at the elegant dinner attended by more than 700 of the Island's top business leaders, on May 20 at the Crest Hollow Country Club.
The guest speaker for the evening was Nancy Rauch Douzinas, President, The Rauch Foundation , who was presented with the 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award. Past guest speakers have included such national figures as Cokie Roberts, Gloria Steinem and ABCNews Anchor Robin Roberts.
